Job Description

The SMH Heart Center RN effectively maintains the Standards of Practice and Care, utilizes the nursing process using direct and indirect care and promotes collaboration with physicians and other disciplines. Meets organizational expectations as defined by the Employee Standards of Performance, hospital and department policies and procedures, and the hospital's strategic goals. Verbalizes a clear understanding of continuous quality improvement and customer satisfaction measures and actively participates in improvement initiatives. Assesses/reassesses patient's condition based upon observation of patient and interview of patient and/or family, physician's diagnosis and data, diagnostic results, and relevant data from other healthcare providers. Delegates responsibility to appropriate personnel , as well as, accepts delegated responsibility for function of unit activities on assigned shift. Documents all aspects of patient care and maintains patient records including National Patient Safety Goal Compliance. Provides patients and family members with relevant health care education and instructions regarding treatments and procedures including pre/post hospital care as appropriate. Assists in the orientation and training of new and tenured personnel, reassigned nurses, student nurses, patient care assistants, and faculty; serves as a preceptor when requested. Attends all mandatory hospital required training. Accurately applies and interprets data relating to EKG monitoring, B/P and pulse. Consistently recognizes changes in individual EKG's: identifies dysrythmia's and responds appropriately. Accurately completes all electronic documentation to include assessments, procedure information, and charging for all procedures. Demonstrates ability to coordinate with other departments and physicians to perform test efficiently. Participate in staff meeting, educational programs, committees, QA activities and mandatory in-services. Unit specific skills checklist and competencies completed prior to end of 90 day evaluation. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the organization. Upon orientation staff will be able to float between Stress and Invasive Area. Demonstrates skills and knowledge to accurately assess patient's ability to perform exercise stress test and for contraindications for pharmacological stress test. Demonstrates skills and knowledge to accurately perform all types of stress testing, Peripheral vascular studies, and all aspects of holter monitoring to include hook up and scanning. Demonstrates ability to operate, and trouble shoot all exercise and diagnostic equipment in the Cardiology department. Weekend rotation is required (on Saturday from 8:00 to 12:00 and call on Sunday from 8:00 to 11:00 A.M). Demonstrates skills and knowledge of pre and post angiogram procedures to include sheath removals, pre pacemaker implantations, pre AICD implantations, TEE, TEE with Cardioversion, Reveal implants, and other procedures as department dictates. Preferred: 1 year Nursing experience preferably (telemetry, ICU or ER) dealing with cardiac patients. Graduate from an accredited program for nursing education. Required: Current knowledge of the nursing role and scope of practice as defined by the State of Louisiana Nurse Practice Act and the Louisiana Board of Nursing. Current knowledge of American Nurses Association(ANA)Code of Ethics. Knowledge of current trends and demonstration of standards of care in assigned unit. Successful completion of mandatory requirements including unit proficiencies/competencies. Demonstration of effective problem solving, decision-making, interpersonal, and teamwork skills. Demonstration of effective verbal and written communication. Demonstration of positive customer service. Graduated of an NLN accredited RN program. Current CPR and ACLS certification. Preferred: Registered Vascular Sonographer. Required: Current licensure to practice professional nursing in the State of Louisiana. Current American Heart Association(AHA) Healthcare Provider CPR(BLS) and ACLS certification required.
