The Charge RN assists the Director in the supervision and management of assigned units, coordinates and communicates with other shifts to ensure continuity of care; assumes responsibility in absence of Director. For those departments that do not have 24/7 charge RN. The charge RN will rotate call with the Director. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in the SMH Vision Mission and Values statement. Major Duties: Meets organizational expectations as defined by the Employee Standards of Performance, hospital and department policies and procedures, and the hospitals strategic goals. Verbalizes a clear understanding of continuous quality improvement and customer satisfaction measures and actively participates in improvement initiatives. Participates in planning, organizing, implementing and controlling operation of a Nursing Unit(s). Coordinates and directs activities of the Nursing employees. Assists Director with management responsibilities such as staff schedules, payroll, budget and equipment recommendations. Serves as a resource for staff.
Obtains external and internal customer feedback to ensure unit operations are meeting customer requirements. Meets patient satisfaction goals. Makes and/or reviews patient care assignments. Participates in formulating unit specific goals and standards of care.
Assumes responsibility for the unit as assigned. Assists in maintaining and developing a competent, productive and quality conscious work force. Participates in performance evaluations, counsels, takes corrective action and makes recommendations for pay for performance and discharge. Evaluates competency of unit employees and assists in maintaining records. Involves employees in problem solving and decision making.
Participates in monthly unit meetings submits input for the meetings. Attends meetings as designated and responsible for educating staff. Assists in maintaining budget and productivity within acceptable guidelines. Plans for appropriate numbers and levels of staff. Assists in developing and implementing new strategies to contain costs and improve customer service. Promotes the flow of information by establishing, utilizing and maintaining effective communication systems within the unit. Communicates clear, concise accurate and timely information to staff, superiors and other departments. Communicates effectively with physicians. Involves physicians in patient care issues. Identifies, resolves and communication both actual and potential sources of conflict. Assists with unit based quality improvement activities. Identifies dimensions of care to be evaluated and communicates to staff. Evaluates results and implements change or corrective action as appropriate. Promotes quality of care and cost effectiveness within the unit through individual and staff involvement in Performance Improvement. Demonstrates initiatives in identifying opportunities for self-development and enhancement professional competency and promotes and maintains an environment that encourages and provides appropriate opportunity for the staffs professional development and achievement of annual performance. Attends appropriate educational offerings, both mandatory and elective. Demonstrates leadership skills and knowledge through job performance. Establishes personal and professional goals objectives. Adjusts schedules or assignments as necessary. Participates in ongoing educational activities. Assists in development of standards for unit based orientation and competency evaluations, maintaining records and evaluation of employees.
Assists in directing and coordinating clinical policy and standards of care for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient/customers. Integrates the nursing process into the clinical setting. Performs and teaches technical skills when appropriate. Can obtain resources for complex and unfamiliar procedures. Makes rounds in clinical areas to evaluate patient care and employee needs. Demonstrates customer service. Exhibits professionalism, cooperation, self-control and courtesy in relating to physicians, staff, families and patients. Demonstrates respect for authority, discusses problems and follows chain of command. Maintains confidentiality of all pertinent patient care information to assure patient rights are protected. Experience in caring for the patient population of the particular unit managed or such experience gained through orientation. Ability to organize multiple tasks and maintain control of own and others workflow. Ability to communicate effectively, verbally, and in writing, with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Prepared by education, training or experience to work with age specific populations including, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient/customers as indicated by service. Prolonged periods of standing/walking. Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact. Exposure to body fluids; potential exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials. Ability to react quickly to emergencies. Ability to handle and administer narcotics. Ability to read, write and communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and push/pull up to 250 pounds. Normal vision and hearing. Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs, sit in one place, squat, kneel, reach, bend, and crawl. Ability to perform repetitive hand/wrist motion, as well as use hands for gripping and squeezing. Good hand-eye coordination.
Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the organization. Education/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Preferred: Two years Nursing experience in a hospital patient setting. Required: Current knowledge of the nursing role and scope of practice as defined by the State of Louisiana Nurse Practice Act and the Louisiana Board of Nursing. Current knowledge of American Nurses Association(ANA)Code of Ethics. Knowledge of current trends and demonstration of standards of care in assigned unit. Successful completion of mandatory requirements including unit proficiencies/competencies. Demonstration of effective problem solving, decision-making, interpersonal, and teamwork skills. Demonstrated clinical ability and management potential. Demonstration of effective verbal and written communication. Demonstration of positive customer service. Graduated of an NLN accredited RN program. Current CPR and ACLS certification. Minimum of 2 years experience in a cardiac related field, telemetry, critical care or ER. Licensure/Certification: Required: Current licensure to practice professional nursing in the State of Louisiana. Current American Heart Association(AHA) Healthcare Provider CPR(BLS) and ACLS certification required.
