The medical social worker assists patients/families with social and emotional needs. She/he collects objective data and assesses the discharge needs of patients. The medical social worker identifies and informs patients of community resources. She/he assists in actual contact of referring agencies in the acquisition of medical equipment, arrangements for home health services or any other discharge service. The medical social worker provides counseling to patients with identified emotional or substance abuse problems, crisis events or problems accessing services. The medical social worker operates as a member of an interdisciplinary team providing comprehensive patient care services. When identifying gaps in services, the medical social worker engages in program development. She/He serves as Womens & Childrens Hospital representative on relevant community boards and participates in various community projects. The medical social worker is involved in designated performance improvement projects in the department and initiates changes in policy and procedures which enhance patient care and services.
Masters degree or masters candidate from an accredited college/university, with training and education in health care, counseling, family life studies or social work. No license is required, but all work is done under the supervision of the Director of Social Services who is board certified (BCSW). Must have good interpersonal skills and the ability to function in stressful crisis situations.
